Happy 4th Birthday, Katie!!!

This little princess turned 4 years old today.

Grandma Condie was here over the weekend. She brought this princess dress for Katie. It was just perfect because she had a princess birthday party.

And a princess birthday cake.

And all the other little princesses in the village came to have tea (apple juice).

Natalie is taking princess lessons from Katie.

And all the princesses played musical princesses; duck, duck, goose, with the wave of the magic wand, and were damsels in distress with Katie's brothers and their own brothers chasing them around the yard.
The knights in shining armor were banished from inside the village to the outdoors for the remainder of the party.
And the princesses knocked on the windows in the upper tower to get the knights attention, but the knights had soon forgotten the fair princesses and were off to sword fighting (some even had machine guns-from Jake's birthday).

After an eventful morning this princess was ready for a special birthday lunch, of her choice. She chose Carl's Jr.

One more adventure for the princess. She got to pick out her own birthday present. It was a very difficult decision. So much to choose from.

After much searching she found it. The perfect fit. A purple, soft unicorn to ride and snuggle. And they lived happily ever after.

To be continued... I'm sure.

JARED MICHAEL HILL

His name is Jared, but his friends and everyone else call him Jake. I thought this would be a good time to introduce him on the blog since he's been featured all week with events. Jake was born May 25, 2000 in Plano, Texas. He wants to return there someday to catch an armadillo and fish in the ocean. He is just about the finish 2nd grade, 3 days left!

Jake is an ideal first child. He gets himself up every morning at 6:45am for school and comes down to wake me up. He takes his dishes to the sink and takes care of his stuff. He gets himself ready and watches the clock to make sure he leaves right on time, same time every morning to catch the bus. He does his homework without being asked and devours books. There isn't a book on the shelf he hasn't read, some more than once. I am starting to have a difficult time finding books he hasn't read. His favorite series is The Magic Tree House books, he has everyone. He received The Chronicles of Narnia for his birthday and has already finished 2 of the 7 books. He is a wealth of knowledge and always has facts to tell.

Jake has been fishing and camping with his dad since he was 18 months old. Mike set up a tent in the front room of our little apartment and they practiced sleeping in it. Now Jake can pretty much survive on his own in the wilderness. He packs his gear, sets up his fishing pole and catches the fish. He has been on some big hikes in the Sawtooth mountains. And when he learns to play "I Am A Child Of God" with both hands on the piano he gets to go deep sea fishing for sharks with his dad. (His dad may have helped him set up that goal.)

This is a picture of Jake at his wrestling tournament. This is his second year. It's hard for me to watch him wrestle, especially the two times he has gotten a bloody nose. He enjoys it. Jake is very self determined. He wants to run the fastest, work the hardest and do his best at everything.

We are going to Hawaii in two weeks. Jake and his dad have some big plans to catch something, anything BIG in the ocean.

Big job for a little boy and a little mower.
This is a big job for his parents, let alone a 7 year old boy. But he did it. It took over 6 hours. Dad helped. Jake grew some character that day, and to think mom was going to stop him, because it was too big a job.

Jake could survive in the wilderness. He could also survive home alone. Sunday morning he makes us eggs. After Natalie was born and mornings were hard for me because of lack of sleep, Jake told me one morning to get back in bed. He said he would take care of Dallas and Katie. He helped them get breakfast and brought me breakfast in bed. So thoughtful.

Jake and his dad have a very special relationship. They have shared many adventures together in the outdoors, working and playing. Here they are roasting Jack Rabbit over the fire. Yep, they ate it too. Well Jake had a bite, dad ate the rest. They have also had quail, pheasant, deer, elk and rattlesnake. That's right I said rattlesnake.
I really appreciate Jake. Now, Jake is still a kid and a kid can be... a kid... But he does makes being a mother, easier. Knock on wood.

Happy 8th Birthday, Jake!!

This handsome kid turned 8 years old today. He had a fun weekend celebrating. And he was the center of attention, no so much for his birthday, but mainly to explain how he got that HUGE shiner.

He wanted a pirate cake. At first I was a little concerned that a pirate cake might be too much for my limited cake making skills. But it turned out alright thanks to ideas from the Internet. What a great resource. It was surprisingly easy and fun to do.

This pirate ship did end up with battle damage after it was finished it fell over! That was a... frustrating. Thank goodness for extra frosting. We patched up the hole it left in the side of the ship with lots and lots of frosting.
Boondocks!

Jake got a choice of either a pirate birthday party or a trip to Boondocks with a friend. It was a tough decision, but I think he was happy with his choice in the end. He and his dad got up very early on Saturday morning and went to breakfast. He met a friend, Josh Carrier at Boondocks to play miniature golf and go-carts and more. They had a lot of fun and spent several hours there.

Jake's good friend also happens to be the son of his second grade teacher, Mrs. Carrier. Luckily, he really enjoys his teacher and Mrs. Carrier loves Jake to pieces or this picture could have been an awkward moment in the life of an 8 year old boy.

Spoiled all day by his dad. They even went to lunch together. Jake obviously couldn't see out of his right eye so all the pictures we took of him ended up with his head tilted up like this trying to see out with that right eye. It was so funny to watch him. Poor thing.

We had cake and ice cream late that afternoon with some friends and family.

He got a waterproof watch from his dad that he was really excited about.
But the surprise kitten is what he really wanted. I think this will be a birthday he remembers as good times.

Cub Scout Initiation

Jake is going to be a cub scout. He got to attend a welcoming pack meeting on Thursday evening.

They made bottle rockets and launched them off. What a blast for a group of 8 to 11 year old boys. The leaders rigged up this launch deck with an air compressor to send the rockets up. It was really neat.

Jake received a cub scout initiation and it left a BIG mark. A big black and blue mark that is. There was a trampoline and about 10 boys on it. Need I saw more.

Poor kid. He took it very well. He had a headache and a really sore eye. This picture doesn't do justice to the size of the swelling.

This is the next morning. It came with a headache, but Jake was happy to get the day off from school.

Wait a minute. That eye looks really familiar. Where have I seen that same look before???

Oh yeah, Katie had that same look a year ago when she feel down the fireman's pole. Although hers came with a trip to the ER. She had a small crack in her skull above her eye and a concussion. Happy to say she make a full recovery.

Swimming Lessons

We finished our 9th week of swimming lessons today. It's been fun to watch everyone progress, but I think we will all enjoy a summer break. We had lessons Monday throughThursday. Now everyone can swim which is a wonderful feeling for me as we head into the summer water season.

This is Jake. Jake can swim well. He is working on his strokes and diving. I never had swimming lessons growing up so I taught myself how not to drowned. Mike tries not to laugh at the way I swim. But he does laugh when I plug my nose to go under water.

The last day of swimming lessons is safety day. They practice with life jackets and rafts. That will come in handy for our trip to the ocean in 20 days! Yeah!!

Dallas has come a long way this year. He likes the water, but he doesn't like to get his face wet. Which is a problem when your learning how to swim. The cure was a pair of goggles. It changed everything and now the teacher has a hard time giving him the next direction because his face in always in the water. Go figure.
Katie's goo goo goggles.

Katie is our little fish. At three years old (almost 4) she can swim very well. She loves the water and is fearless.

She even goes off the diving board. No fear.

On the other hand, it took a whole lot of courage for this guy (our big D) to jump off. He did end up jumping off and in. What a milestone.
